Incorporated as The Township of Indiana in 1805, it was the fourth township formed in Allegheny County north of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers. Over 7,000 people reside within its 17 square miles. It is part of the Fox Chapel School District.
- Various parks within the township include Emmerling Park, with 59 Acres, and Middle Road Community Park with 40 Acres. The Rural Ridge, Dorseyville, and Indianola Community Parklets offer playgrounds and pavilions.
- Dorseyville, Indianola, Rural Ridge, and Walter Chapel are the communities within the township.
- Hartwood Acres Park is shared with Hampton Township. It encompasses 629 acres, and features free concerts on Sunday evenings in the summer months. The park also includes the Hartwood Mansion with tours available.
- It is home to the Council of the Three Rivers American Indian Center since 1976.
